33-year-old Terrance Dewayne Dartez was killed in a collision with a garbage truck on U.S. 165 on the morning of September 11. Dartez was a passenger in a Ford F150 that was driven by 38-year-old Kevin Todd Miller. The F150 was about a half-mile south of Ikes Road when it failed to slow down as it approached a garbage truck that had just pulled onto the shoulder.
Miller attempted a corrective swerve to avoid a collision. The maneuver wasn’t entirely successful, as the front passenger side of the vehicle made contact with the back of the garbage truck.
Dartez was pronounced dead at the scene. Miller was rushed to a local hospital with what was described as moderate injuries.
Two occupants of the garbage truck were also transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. They were restrained at the time of the crash, while Miller and Dartez were not.
