A grave tragedy took place a couple of blocks away from the boardwalk just off Convention Center Boulevard. 75-year-old Yvette Bowens was killed in a single-vehicle car accident on the afternoon of July 29.

The incident took place on the entry ramp from Convention Center Boulevard, intersecting with the US 90B West HOV lane. The 2009 Honda Accord smashed into a concrete barrier after it veered off the road.

Bowens was rushed to a local hospital after the accident but was unable to survive her injuries.

The car was being driven by 74-year-old Spurgeon Lewis at the time of the accident. His relation to Bowens is not known at this time.

Lewis was reportedly wearing his seatbelt when the car veered off the road. He suffered moderate injuries and is being treated at a nearby medical facility.

The investigation into this somber occurrence is still ongoing, and it is not known what caused the car to angle off to the side, or what caused Lewis to lose control of the vehicle. The presence of foreign substances in Lewis’ system is being looked into, but the results of the toxicology exam have not yet been revealed.

It’s not known whether Bowens was wearing her seatbelt when the accident took place.

The Johnson Firm expresses its sincere condolences to Bowens’ friends and family and hopes that Lewis can make a full recovery. We can be reached at (337) 433-1414 in the event you or a loved one is injured in a car accident.
